In classical mythology Diana, virgin, is the symbol of chastity and wears a crescent on the head, like the bears Lucina serving women in childbirth according to Roman mythology. It is thus related to fertility.
Christian iconography associated with the Virgin Mary with these goddesses, hence it is also represented with the crescent of the Immaculate, meaning double attribute of chastity-virginity and motherhood.
The putti symbolize love. Also they accompanied the gods of Olympus. Angels usually represent the spirit. Since the cherubs are angels. representing spiritual love.
