The Madonna of the Book is based on Renaissance painting "Madonna Colonna" by Raphael (1483-1510). The child looks at us as in the picture, capturing our sympathy. He has a restless, wayward and mischievous look, trying to be the center of attention of his mother and the viewer. The original painting can be dated between the years 1507-1508.
